Bonny K8 chipsets from ServerWorks

— 3:02 AM on June 3, 2004

Momentum for AMD in the enterprise continues to gather with an announcement that ServerWorks is designing chipsets for the Opteron processor. Gary Thomas, general manager of Broadcom's ServerWorks division, described AMD's processor as "an industry-standard platform," and said that customers have come to them asking for such a product. ServerWorks boards for AMD should be on equal footing with the company's Intel offerings. Motherboards for both processor families will support 1-4 CPUs, and share a common chipset platform for I/O and networking. Analysts believe that contractual entanglements with Intel, which competes with ServerWorks for server chipsets, and with parent Broadcom for high-speed networking, have delayed the Opteron chipset announcement until now.
