Linus pix NX fix

— 1:30 AM on June 7, 2004

Last week, a patch was submitted to enable the no-execute "NX" memory flag in Linux. The patch was submitted by Red Hat programmer Ingo Molnar and based on prototype code from Intel. Following Molnar's submission of the patch, a discussion on the Linux kernel mailing list came to the consensus that very few programs would break with NX enabled, leading Linux founder Linus Torvalds to remark: "It sounds like we should just have NX on by default." With a bright future in Linux, upcoming support in Windows XP and the backing of every major x86 chipmaker, it appears that the NX ship has sailed and left no one behind.
