Legal challenges could sink 321 Studios

— 5:32 AM on June 17, 2004

The latest lawsuit against 321 Studios, the company behind DVD X Copy and Games X Copy, may force the company to shut down. 321 Studios' DVD copying software has already been removed from the market and the company's games copying software is now facing legal scrutiny thanks to a suit filed by Atari, Electronic Arts, and Vivendi Universal Games.

As you might expect, 321 Studios bills Games X Copy as a game backup utility.

GAMESXCOPY lets you make a PERFECT backup copy of virtually any PC Game. GAMESXCOPY is a powerful utility and all you need is a PC with either a CD or a DVD burner. No more threat of losing a game due to theft, scratches, skipping, freezing or other media imperfections. Your copy works just like the original; your entire collection can be archived and your investment protected.
However, video game companies have charged that because the software circumvents copyright protection, it should be illegal, regardless of fair use.
