NVIDIA's bridge to the future

— 11:26 AM on June 22, 2004

When I was working on my PCI Express review, I wanted to know whether the GeForce 6800GT PCI-E card was bridged or native PCI Express, so naturally, I pulled off the heatsink to get a look for myself. Here's what I saw. On the left is an AGP NV40 chip, and on the right is the NV45 package, with GPU plus bridge chip.

Click the pics for larger versions, if you must. Looks like the NV45 is just an NV40 chip plus a bridge chip. Of course, bridging didn't seem to slow down the 6800GT's performance much, if at all, especially given the 915/925X chipsets' slightly slower performance overall versus the 875P.
