AT&T Wireless set for 3G launch
The official media advisory is a bit coy, but it is widely believed that AT&T Wireless will announce the availability of 3G mobile phone services in four major U.S. metropolitan markets.
The company, the target of a pending $41bn takeover bid by Cingular Wireless, is expected to announce that subscribers in San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and Detroit will be offered the new 3G services.
By offering the upgraded service in four markets, AT&T Wireless will satisfy an agreement with Japan's NTT DoCoMo, which holds an equity stake of about 16 per cent in the US network operator.
AT&T Wireless has scheduled a news teleconference discussing "an innovative new wireless service offer" at noon eastern daylight time today.
