Western Digital's RAID redux

— 1:48 AM on August 4, 2004

Yesterday, Western Digital announced a new line of hard disks targeted for ATA-based RAID systems. The new drives, badged Caviar© RAID Edition (RE), sport a disk array-optimized Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) feature and promise increased reliability due to the company's "extensive experience gained from our enterprise-class WD Raptor™ drives to develop a high capacity, highly reliable hard drive perfectly suited for RAID server applications." The first Caviar RE drives pack a capacity of 250GB, a three year warranty, and are already shipping. Estimated street prices are $205 (IDE) and $215 (SATA).
