TiVo announces growth initiative, rebates

TiVo is hunting for new subscribers. The company has announced a "growth initiative" that lowers the price of a 40-hour PVR to $99 after a $100 mail-in rebate. Of course, TiVo's service will also cost you $12.95 a month or $299 for your product's lifetime.

In related news, TiVo has received FCC approval for TiVoToGo, a feature that would enable users to share recorded shows. TiVoToGo sharing will apparently be limited to nine users, which seems entirely reasonable. However, TiVoToGo doesn't appear to be nearly as flexible as PC-based PVR apps like BeyondTV, which record shows in common, restriction-free video formats that can be played back on PCs, handhelds, modified Xbox consoles, and other devices. BeyondTV doesn't require a monthly subscription, either. You will need a PC, though.
