Carmack's quixotic quest for the X Prize

— 10:30 PM on August 11, 2004

The X Prize is a $10 million prize that will be awarded to the first team that launches a privately funded spaceship carrying 3 people to a height of 100 kilometers or 62.5 miles and returns safely back down to earth. The team must also be able to replicate the launch with the same ship within two weeks of the first launch to claim the prize. Well, aside from producing amazing graphics engines, id Software's John Carmack and his fellow space cowboys at Armadillo Aerospace are one of many teams competing for this prize. Unfortunately, The Register is reporting that Armadillo's latest rocket launch attempt crashed and burned over the Texas plains last weekend.

$35,000 of rocket is now a whole lot of primo Armadillo Droppings. There are a few pipe fittings that survived, but that’s about it. Amazingly, even though the on-board camera was destroyed, the tape did survive with only some scuffed sections. It’s a good thing Doom 3 is selling very well…
