In the wake of Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel's third CPL championship and amidst his conquest of the $25,000 DOOM 3 tourney at Quakecon, Abit perfectly timed the introduction of its new line of Fatal1ty-branded motherboards at Quakecon 2004. The first of these boards, alas, will be an Intel-based mobo, but Athlon 64 versions will come later.
When Abit first started talking about creating a Fatal1ty mobo, the company made some bold statements about the number of new things you'd see on the board, never before seen on a motherboard. Needless to say, I was skeptical about the possibility of gimmickry and such, since high-end motherboards are already loaded with all sorts of features. Fortunately, the actual Fatal1ty board looks like it has the potential to be something really unique, but not because it has a giant UV-lighted breakdancer just below the PCI Express slots. Instead, Abit has gone for a more conventional feature setLGA775 socket, PCI Express X16 for graphics, two PCI-E X1 slots for expansion, two PCI slots, and DDR2 memoryand concentrated its enhancements on power delivery on the board. In a nod to the original MAX concept, Abit has left off the serial and parallel ports, but PS/2 ports remain.
We've already seen good things out of the Abit AA8, but Abit says power delivery on the Fatal1ty board has been completely revamped and promises monster overclocks. Could this be another BH7-class overclocker? We'll find out soon. The first Fatal1ty boards will ship later this year, based on the Intel 925XE chipset with 1066MHz front-side bus.
