ATI preparing RV410 mainstream GPU?

— 12:56 AM on August 18, 2004

According to this story over at Xbit Labs, ATI is readying a mainstream GPU to compete with NVIDIA's recently-announced GeForce 6600 series. The Xbit article cites this thread at the HKEPC Hardware Forum, which claims that ATI has an eight-pipe derivative of its X800 series called RV410. RV410 would inherit all of the X800 series' features, including 3Dc and Shader Model 2.0b support. ATI has yet to announce any official plans to counter the GeForce 6600 series, but given how the mid-range X600s stack up on paper, it seems plausible that ATI would be looking compete with something like RV410.
