Demand surge spawns AMD processor shortage

— 2:38 AM on August 24, 2004

DigiTimes is reporting that AMD's Athlon 64 and Sempron processors are in short supply after a spike in demand followed the company's latest round of price cuts. The shortage apparently affects supply channels in Taiwan, China, and Europe, but no mention is made of North America. The DigiTimes article suggests that the supply shortage, combined with Intel's recent price cuts, could make it difficult for AMD to significantly improve its processor market share. A processor shortage can't be helping AMD's chances with major OEMs like Dell, either.
