ATI preps Radeon X700 to battle GeForce 6600
The Inq has a little bit of info on ATI's widely rumored forthcoming answer to NVIDIA's GeForce 6600 chips. Sayeth Fudo:
As for its performance compared to X600 it comes from doubling the number of pipelines in the X600 from four to eight. Not many other things have changed.
I expect some other things have changed, in that the X700 is likely derived from the X800 GPU, complete with Shader Model 2.0b support, as The Inq notes. Of course, we'd already expected it
, but the X700 rumors are swirling faster now, all pointing to a mid-September launch. The top-end X700 will likely need a faster core clock speed than the 500MHz of the GeForce 6600 GT in order to get better performance, but I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen.
