The Carmack mulls his future

— 10:19 AM on September 9, 2004

CNN's Chris Morris has interviewed John Carmack about his plans for a new game engine to succeed Doom 3, the rocketry business, being a new dad, and what comes next. Among other things, The Carmack reveals that he may be considering retirement from the game engine biz after this next engine. The next engine, however, should be a thing of wonder:

"Visually," Carmack teases, "it's going to be a pretty good step above what we've shown in 'Doom'."
id Software is hoping to have its new game, which won't be based on any previous game franchise, finished in about two years, a much shorter incubation period than for Doom 3.
