AMD outsells Intel briefly in retail desktop PCs

— 9:57 AM on September 14, 2004

These folks are reporting that AMD outsold Intel in retail desktop PC systems for the week of August 21. AMD captured 54% of the retail desktop processor market, while Intel had 45%. AMD managed to beat out Intel one week in April this year, as well. Although this segment is but a small slice of the overall PC market, it is a fairly high visibility segment where consumers can freely choose between a variety of systems based on both Intel and AMD CPUs. Intel still leads by miles in overall market share, and that won't likely change for a very, very long time since Intel has many times the production capacity AMD does.
