PCI Express north bridge plot thickens

— 5:00 AM on September 15, 2004

DigiTimes is reporting that VIA and SiS will begin volume production of PCI Express-equipped north bridge chips in October:

VIA Technologies and Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) are likely to miss securing fourth quarter orders, as the two companies will not be able to ramp up their PCIe-supporting north bridge chipsets until October or even later, this year, according to sources at the companies.
That appears to vindicate an earlier report that PCI Express motherboards for Athlon 64 processors wouldn't be available until 2005. However, TR reader Evandro spotted a PCI Express-laden motherboard tucked away on Abit's web site. The board uses a VIA K8T890 chipset, and according to an "ABIT Marketing" administrator post in Abit's forums, the AX8 could be available by the end of October.
