High-end graphics card availability questioned

— 4:07 PM on September 27, 2004

So what's the deal with availability of high-end graphics cards like the GeForce 6800 Ultra and Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition (or "Phantom Edition", as I've heard it called)? Rumors persist that both cards are very hard to come by, especially the Radeon X800 XT PE. Are ATI, NVIDIA, and partners producing and shipping enough cards to meet demand? Are they, like some of the more extreme rumors say, simply not shipping any more at all? It's a tough question, because neither company will disclose exact shipping numbers or the like.

Fortunately, the folks at Gamer's Depot have asked around and gotten some answers from leading PC manufacturers. The short version of the answer seems to be that neither company is shipping enough cards to meet demand, but the cards go to different places—NVIDIA's to smaller customers and retail, ATI's to Dell. However, I'm summarizing a number of conflicting answers; read 'em yourself and see what you think.
