Gmail adds POP support

— 2:59 PM on November 10, 2004

Google's Gmail service just got a little bit sweeter. POP support is being added to the still-beta email service, allowing third-party mail clients like Outlook or Thunderbird to download messages. For current beta users, POP support is free. However, the Gmail FAQ suggests that the service may ultimately be offered at a nominal fee. Since POP users would be avoiding text ads normally displayed through Gmail's web interface, a nominal fee seems likely. Gmail may also inject text-based ads into emails downloaded via POP.
