TiVo to sneak banner ads into fast-forwarding

— 11:28 AM on November 17, 2004

Advertisers have been no fan of TiVo's ability to skip through commercials, but the LA Times is reporting that banner ads will soon infect the fast-forward process.

By March, TiVo viewers will see "billboards," or small logos, popping up over TV commercials as they fast-forward through them, offering contest entries, giveaways or links to other ads. If a viewer "opts in" to the ad, their contact information will be downloaded to that advertiser — exclusively and by permission only — so even more direct marketing can take place.
TiVo apparently plans to allow users to directly purchase products and participate in surveys from the comfort of their couch, too. The company's ability to target ads based on viewing habits may pique viewer interest, but if the ads are too obtrusive, ad-free PC-based solutions may become more attractive.
