AMD brings PowerNow to Opteron

— 1:38 AM on December 6, 2004

C|Net is reporting that AMD will bring advanced power management functionality to Opteron workstation and server processors. Dubbed PowerNow with Optimized Power Management, the new technology doesn't quite roll off the tongue like Cool'n'Quiet. However, AMD promises up to an 80% reduction in power consumption thanks to some nifty clock throttling. Opteron processors with PowerNow have apparently been shipping since the middle of this year, although BIOS and driver updates that support the power management tech won't be released until the first half of 2005.
