Aureal pairs Vortex2 with DSP for audio nirvana

— 1:48 PM on November 15, 1999

I really like this idea. Aureal has announced a new Vortex2 sound card called the SQ3500 Turbo that couples an Aureal Vortex 2 audio chip with a 100MHz Motorola DSP. This move should allow the processing overhead from Aureal's A3D positional audio to be off-loaded to a coprocessor on the sound card. I reckon that makes this card the GeForce 256 of the audio world--only in audio, fill rate isn't an issue.

However, these puppies should debut for about $199 retail; pretty steep for a sound card. Thanks to AnandTech for the heads up.
