Sander's gonna jump outta his wooden shoes when he sees what Azonic and I have been hacking together on the right column over there. The new "Top topics" section should show the most active news comments for the past three weeks, and all of the news-related sections now show the number of comments posted on 'em (in the little yellow brackets there). Make sense?
I'll keep adding things as I figure this stuff out. We've recently added vastly improved forums, polling, the Breadbox, and better comments tracking in the right-hand column. Any other suggestions/ideas (within reason) for news engine tweaks/format changes?
