NVIDIA trumpets SLI shipments

Although many have written off SLI as a gimmick, NVIDIA's flagship chipset is apparently selling well. NVIDIA claims to have shipped over 350,000 nForce4 SLI chipsets, indicating that at least among motherboard manufacturers, a market exists for the high-end product. Apparently, most SLI-capable systems are actually running two graphics cards as well:

According to the company’s probes, 80% of systems equipped with mainboards based on the nForce4 SLI actually featured two graphics cards. Furthermore, the most successful Multi-GPU configuration on the market is relatively expensive dual NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT setup, which was installed in the majority of the SLI-enabled systems, according to NVIDIA.
While still an expensive solution, NVIDIA's SLI reincarnation seems to have found an audience of affluent gamers and enthusiasts.
