Like Richard Pryor, the it turns out that the PSX ain't dead yet. On the 15th of April, Sony will unleash the PSX 7700 and 5700, with brand new firmware. Owners of 7500 and 5500 units will eventually be able to upgrade to the same firmware, containing an update that allows the PSX to encode the television programs it records for the Playstation Portable handheld. The encodes will run 4-5x longer than real time, disable all but the DVR functionality, and are unplayable by the system itself. Sony Japan has not yet declared a US launch date, but with the Emotion Engine looking a bit long in the tooth, it may not matter.
