Sony, Toshiba discuss common next-gen DVD standard

— 3:09 AM on April 21, 2005

Sony and Toshiba are discussing the possibility of a unified standard for next-gen DVDs. Sony currently backs the Blu-ray standard while Toshiba favors HD DVD, but an agreement between the two companies could be reached by the end of the month. It's unclear whether such an agreement would favor an existing standard or create a new one. Either way, it would be nice to have a single standard so we can avoid repeating the DVD+/-RW mess all over again.
