Fuel cell breakthrough to power laptops?

— 9:20 AM on May 23, 2005

CNN has a quick write-up on a company in Cambridge, England that claims to have developed a very efficient fuel cell design compact enough to power laptop computers and other mobile devices. Fuel cells have long been a promising technology waiting for a practical implementation, and this may be it:

CMR said the new design would run for four times longer than conventional batteries in a laptop or other devices like power tools.

"It's also instantly rechargeable," said Michael Priestnall, CMR's chief technology officer.

I'll take three! No doubt efforts to bring the new design to laptop PCs will take some time. The company is initially hunting bigger fish, planning a potential demo for the U.S. Department of Defense.
