Sony makes a Play(station) for world domination

According to this bit at TechWeb, Sony's willing to sell other companies the chips that power their Playstation 2 game console. That means multiple vendors may sell PS2-compatible boxes. Given the fact the PS2 is already potentially much more than a console (a DVD player, web browser, communications device), this move confirms Sony's intention to do what a lot of folks have said they want to do: make the Playstation 2 the cornerstone of the company's business and replace the PC in a lot of scenarios. No wonder Microsoft liked the idea enough to jump into the market with the X-box. (Credit Slashdot for the link.)
