Intel to classify Itanium, Xeon with model numbers

— 2:39 AM on July 13, 2005

X86-secret is reporting (in French, bring a translator) that Intel will adopt a model number scheme for its server processors starting next year. Itanium and Xeon processors will be covered by the new four-digit model number scheme, which is a full order of magnitude greater than the three-digit scheme Intel uses for desktop and mobile chips. Model numbers for server processors are nothing new, of course. AMD's Opteron processors have been branded with three-digit model numbers since their introduction.
