Lapping it up

— 1:03 AM on June 15, 2000

If overclocking is a dark art, CPU lapping is positively pitch black. Sanding on your processor? Well, maybe. This article at OCtools provides a nice, visual demonstration of lapping done right. One caveat: way too few lapping articles mention that this technique is only good for processors with metal caps on top; lapping is intended to even out the cap surface and make it thinner. Not all new CPUs come with metal caps, though. Don't go sanding on that new 1GHz PIII or Athlon with a practically exposed core. Aag..
