ATI R520 engineering sample cornered

— 2:29 AM on September 8, 2005

HKEPC Hardware has a quick look at a REV02 sample of ATI's upcoming R520 graphics chip. According to HKEPC's sources, R520 was designed with 32 pixel pipelines, but yields will determine how many of those pipes are enabled in final retail products. There's no guarantee that 32-pipe cards will be available in significant quantities, and they may have to run at lower clock speeds than R520 cards with fewer pipelines enabled. Interestingly, the article also claims that R520 has a 512-bit memory controller, although only 256 bits of that capacity will be utilized by initial cards.
