Chaintech cries uncle, quits motherboards

— 11:27 AM on September 8, 2005

DigiTimes has a report today claiming that Chaintech plans to phase out its motherboard business. This decision comes amid a major shakeout among motherboard manufacturers, in which many second-tier mobo makers like Chaintech have run into trouble. Chaintech's sales have taken a nosedive in the past year or so. DigiTimes says Chaintech will continue making graphics cards and plans to introduce a memory module lineup next month.

Only a couple of years ago, Chaintech expressed aspirations to become a major player in the enthusiast motherboard space in North America, hosting not just one but two press events for editors of hardware review sites, and soliciting feedback about its products. The push into high-end boards produced some decent products, but Chaintech didn't follow through consistently into newer generations of enthusiast-class motherboards.
