Here come the Athlon boards

— 1:12 AM on November 17, 1999

American Megatrends, the venerable AMI, has stepped up and produced an Athlon motherboard--called the Megathon, no less!--helping fill the partial void in the Athlon mobo space. This isn't just another consumer board, however: it's a server motherboard aimed at system integrators. As such, this board is designed for stability. AMI chose to go with what is becoming a popular mix of support chips:

The Megathon supports the AMD Athlon system bus with Front Side Bus (FSB) speeds at 200 MHz. Based around the advanced architecture of a chipset comprising the AMD-751™ system controller for the North Bridge and VIA Super South (686A) for the South Bridge, the Megathon benefits from industry-leading levels of stability.
