Dual-core Power Mac G5 rumors swirl

Think Secret is reporting that Apple will update its Power Mac G5 lineup before the end of the month. The update is expected to include dual-core PowerPC 970MP processors, which IBM announced in July. PowerPC 970MP processors have 1MB of L2 cache per core and are available with clock speeds between 1.4GH and 2.5GHz. The chips are capable of shutting down one of their two cores to reduce power consumption, and also support SpeedStep-like clock and voltage throttling. With Apple moving to Intel processors, a dual-core G5 could become the last IBM-powered Power Mac.
