Dell dips into luxury PC market with new XPS lines

— 3:11 AM on October 4, 2005

Dell is looking to a new line of luxury XPS desktops and notebooks to boost profits. Targeted at gamers and multimedia buffs, the new XPS systems are equipped with high-end hardware and covered by warranty and tech support from "XPS-Trained Specialists." In fact, Dell even has a team of XPS-Trained Sales Specialists ready to sell the new systems, which sell for quite a bit more than the rest of Dell's largely affordable lineup.

Unfortunately, the new XPS systems lack Athlon 64 processors, making at least the desktop machines less suitable for serious gamers. The XPS M170 notebook looks a little more interesting, though. Although it's a bit hefty, the M170 is available with Intel's fastest Pentium M processors and NVIDIA's GeForce Go 7800 GTX. With those specs, it should be one of the fastest gaming notebooks around.
