AMD's market share inches upward

— 10:53 AM on October 25, 2005

DigiTimes has the numbers from Mercury Research for x86 CPU market share in the third quarter of '05, and AMD has slightly grown its overall slice of the pie in recent months. For desktop PCs, AMD split up the market with Intel 20.4% to 77.5%. In notebooks, the Turion 64 was a relative success, contributing to a 55% jump in AMD mobile processor sales from the second quarter to third. All of this is good news for AMD, but it's not a stupendous performance, given its processors’ obvious leads in performance and power consumption practically everywhere but the mobile space. AMD's overall share of the x86 market stepped up from 16.2% in the second quarter to 17.8% in the third, while Intel's slipped from 82.8% to 80.8%.
