Blown capacitors make a comeback

— 4:18 AM on November 11, 2005

Blown capacitors are back, and this time, they're affecting systems from Dell, HP, and even Apple. This latest round of cap busting doesn't appear to be as widespread as the near-epidemic that plagued the industry several years ago, but afflicted capacitors tend to deteriorate over time, so the problem could get worse. The problem has already caused Dell to miss a quarterly guidance target, and HP was forced to suspend shipments of several products. It's also suspected that the "specific component failure" Apple has blamed for the recall of some iMac G5 systems was a capacitor problem.
