ATI's Avivo transcoding software tested

German magazine CHIP has gotten its hands on a copy of ATI's GPU-accelerated video encoding program, dubbed "Avivo XCode," and has posted some benchmark results. CHIP's Athlon 64 FX-57 and Radeon X1300 test system shows that the VPU-accelerated Avivo XCode is able to encode a VOB file to WMV as much as five times faster than the CPU-based Windows Media encoder. Besides these dramatic performance gains for Windows Media, Avivo XCode claims to produce every color of the MPEG rainbow, from VCD to DVD to PSP. The ATI software is still missing key settings for audio quality, video bitrate, and resolution, but CHIP hopes for these features to make their way into the "soon-to-be-published" final version.
