Spring 2006 target steady for PlayStation 3 launch

— 1:05 AM on December 9, 2005

Despite speculation to the contrary, Sony maintains that it is still targeting a spring 2006 launch for the PlayStation 3. The initial launch may be confined to Japan, though, and many have suggested that the console won't reach North American shores until the 2006 holiday season.

Console speculation has been rampant of late, and with the Xbox 360 trickling into the wild, many are wondering whether Sony can dominate the console market this time around. Sony has more than just the console market at stake, though. The PlayStation 3 is a big part of the company's Blue-ray strategy, and a late or staggered release could affect the adoption of Sony's next-gen DVD format. The PlayStation 3 won't be the only Blu-ray player around this spring, but it could easily be the most attractive one for most folks.
