Friday Night Topic: Reality TV revisited

— 6:17 PM on December 9, 2005

Over three years ago, we asked whether reality TV was just a fad, or something that was here to stay. Looking at recent programming schedules, it's obvious that the latter is the case. Although some reality shows have flopped, big names like Survivor, The Amazing Race, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition are still going strong. New entrants like The Contender, The Biggest Loser, and countless others have fared well, too. I'm even guilty of indulging in a few, most notably The Adam Carolla Project, Monster Garage, and The Ultimate Fighter. Have new and refined concepts improved the quality, or at least entertainment value, of reality television programming over the years? Are there any diamonds in the rough?
