Google targeting eBay, Paypal?

— 9:58 AM on February 27, 2006

Ars Technica reports that Google is planning to move its payment system onto Google Base. The system is already implemented in Google Video, where it allows users to purchase videos by entering their credit card details straight from the streaming page. By porting the payment system over to Google Base, the company will allow people to pay for Base items without having to resort to a third party like PayPal. This is an interesting move, as it should allow Google to chip away at eBay's market share without competing head-on with a PayPal clone or a rival auction service.
