Microsoft confirms six Vista editions

— 12:51 PM on February 27, 2006

Microsoft has confirmed earlier reports that its upcoming Windows Vista OS will ship in six different flavors. There will be three consumer editions (Vista Home Basic, Vista Home Premium, Vista Ultimate), two business editions (Vista Business, Vista Enterprise), and a barebones Vista Starter edition aimed at emerging markets. While Microsoft rightfully states that it will be shipping the exact same number of editions as Windows XP, it should be noted that the XP number includes Media Center, Tablet PC and Professional x64 editions. On the upside, Vista will incorporate Media Center and Tablet PC features into the mainstream home products, and all consumer/business Vista editions will be available for both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. Vista is expected to launch in the second half of this year, with some reports pointing towards an early December release.
