TiVo considers giving away boxes

— 1:13 PM on February 28, 2006

Yahoo! News is reporting that TiVo is considering giving away its set-top boxes in an attempt to attract more subscribers. TiVo Chief Executive Tom Rogers says that the company is "continuing to pursue the prospects of zero upfront and all upfront" pricing, which could help effectively counter increasing competition from cable and satellite companies as well as rival electronics manufacturers. This seems like a desperate move in the wake of DirecTV's abandonment of the company in favor of its own DVR units, but it could eventually help tip the odds in TiVo's favor.
