Google to use AMD servers?

— 3:17 PM on March 2, 2006

Spotted at The Inquirer, this story on SmartMoney.com claims that Google is planning to buy AMD chips for "almost all of its new server purchases." The story is based on a research report by Morgan Stanley analyst Mark Edelstorm, which states that AMD's current server chips are both faster and significantly cheaper than Intel's. Considering Google's current total of 200,000 servers, a commitment to AMD processors could help the world's number two processor builder improve its 11% share of the server market.
