AMD announces new dual-core Opterons

— 1:00 PM on March 6, 2006

Today, AMD announced the release of three new dual-core Opterons running at 2.6GHz. The Opteron 185, 285, and 885 support one-way, two-way, and eight-way systems, respectively. 285 and 885 processors are available now, with the 185 expected to ship within 30 days. As usual, AMD talks up its superior performance per watt, and claims that HP, IBM, and Sun will be offering the new dual-core Opterons in their workstations and servers. While the Opteron 185 won't be available for a month, its performance should be more or less identical to the Athlon 64 FX-60, which we tested earlier this year.
