OS X cracked in half an hour

— 4:35 PM on March 6, 2006

A Swedish Mac enthusiast got a nasty surprise last month after setting up a fully patched Mac mini as a web server and inviting hackers to try breaking into the machine. Six hours into the contest, which was supposed to attest to Mac OS X's superior security, an Australian hacker had already defaced the server's front page. The hacker who won the contest claims that breaking into the machine only took him "20 to 30 minutes," and that he decided to use some unpublished OS X exploits, of which he claims there are "a lot more." This is bad news for Macolytes who cling to OS X's supposedly impenetrable security, although we should point out that there are likely far fewer hackers looking to break into Apple servers than those running Windows or even Linux.
