Intel, VMware to push virtualization

— 11:24 AM on March 8, 2006

Intel has announced that it will be teaming up with VMware to push its Virtualization Technology (VT), which allows a single machine to run multiple operating systems simultaneously without incurring performance hits caused by emulation. VMware says it expects to enable VT support in its ESX Server product by the second half of this year. VMware will also support Intel's VT for Directed I/O (VT-d), which can assign I/O devices to virtual machines, in its future enterprise virtualization products. Intel's VT is currently available on Core Duo, Pentium D 9xx, Pentium 4 6x2, and Xeon 70xx processors. A similar technology will appear on AMD's upcoming Socket AM2, Socket S1, and Socket F chips.
