AOL launches free Internet TV

— 3:09 PM on March 16, 2006

Following last year's announcement, AOL has officially launched its In2TV service. In2TV relies on advertising to provide free, unmetered access to 30 TV shows, including Babylon 5, La Femme Nikita, Lois & Clark, Pinky and the Brain, and Beetlejuice. AOL expects to eventually increase the number of programs to 100, with at least 300 new full-length episodes becoming available each month. The shows stream directly from the In2TV website to anyone with a broadband connection, although Mozilla Firefox users will need install the Mozilla ActiveX plugin first. In2TV programming is also available in AOL's Hi-Q format, which provides "TV & DVD quality" video via Kontiki, a content delivery system akin to BitTorrent.
