Fuel cell to provide 20-hour battery life?

— 1:53 PM on April 7, 2006

The Inquirer is reporting on a story in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun about a new type of fuel cell for notebooks. According to the story, Casio has developed a methanol-powered solid polymer fuel cell that will be 90% smaller than equivalent offerings. The fuel cell will reportedly provide up to 20 hours of battery life per charge, and will sample "within the year." Current fuel cell offerings are often either too large or not significantly better than traditional batteries. It looks like Casio's fuel cell may be small enough to fit inside standard notebooks, while still offering significantly better battery life than current Li-Ion batteries. The original story is available on Nikkei.net here, but a paid registration is required.
