ATI renames Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire chipset?

— 2:14 PM on April 10, 2006

French site PC Inpact (translate here) has uncovered that the spec sheet for Asus' A8R-MVP motherboard now lists an unannounced ATI CrossFire Xpress 1600 chipset. The board has been shipping with a Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire chipset since its release, suggesting that ATI has decided to rename the chipset to better fit with the naming scheme of its recently-released CrossFire Xpress 3200. A quick glance at ATI's site seems to confirm this, although the CrossFire Xpress 1600 is still listed alongside the Xpress 200 CrossFire. The new naming scheme would nonetheless make sense, as the CrossFire Xpress 3200 and 1600 dedicate 32 and 16 PCI Express lanes to CrossFire multi-GPU setups, respectively. Oddly, though, ATI has yet to announce the move, despite the Xpress 200 CrossFire being its most popular CrossFire chipset.
