NVIDIA adds UMC as supplier for 90nm production

— 9:36 AM on April 26, 2006

United Microelectronics Corporation has received orders for 90nm G7x graphics chips from NVIDIA, according to sources quizzed by China's Economic Daily News. UMC will reportedly begin sampling chips to partners in May, with volume production scheduled to begin in the second half of the year "at the earliest." It should be pointed out that UMC is in direct competition with TSMC, or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which is NVIDIA's current supplier of 90nm G7x GPUs. Perhaps this move hints that the GeForce 7900's availability problems are due to insufficient production by TSMC, or perhaps NVIDIA simply intends to tap both manufacturers for a greater supply of chips.
