Sony to ship 50 GB Blu-ray recordables next month

— 2:27 PM on May 5, 2006

Sony has begun shipping 25 GB Blu-ray recordable discs, and announced that 50 GB dual-layer versions are due in June. The discs support a 2x recording speed adding up to 72 Mbps, or 9 MB/s. While this transfer rate would allow a 4.7 GB DVD±R disc to be burned in about nine minutes, it will theoretically force users to wait over an hour and a half to fill a 50 GB Blu-ray disc and just over 45 minutes for a 25 GB single-layer disc. Cutting down burn times to 10 minutes for a 50 GB disc would require a constant 83 MB/s transfer rate, something that most consumer-level hard drives would have a hard time achieving. Still, users who have no qualms about waiting will be able to purchase 50 GB BD-R (write-once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs for $48 and $60, respectively. Meanwhile, the 25 GB variants should be shipping today for $20 and $25. Thanks to Engadget for the tip.
